Starting today, every Friday, Publishing Renaissance will post an End O’ The Week review, in order to draw attention to a few articles, websites, or blog posts that we think are interesting, educational, or helpful. It will by no means be exhaustive, so we encourage you to post additonal links of anything you have come across during the week in the comments sections of these posts to further help out, and to send a link to anything you might find in the coming weeks and months to us at pubrenaissance@gmail.com.
- On Saturday, LuLu Book Review posted an article, In a World…of Book Trailers that highlights, as you may have guessed, a few of the many book trailers that are out there and examines what makes each of them work well, or not, as the case may be. [Disclaimer: mine is among them.] It concludes by giving authors a few things to consider before making a trailer of their own and a few ideas for making the most out of them once they have. Also, if you’ve already made a trailer for your book, consider posting it at Blazing Trailers.
- If you haven’t already, go “claim” your author page at FiledBy.
- Smashwords had an interesting (and exciting) breakdown of why ebooks may already have gone mainstream, complete with geekily awesome graphs. (Yes, I love graphs. Pie charts are even cooler.)
- Check out The New York Times’ article about Vook, “a platform for e-books that will combine text, video and social networking.”
- Another way to get exposure for your book, and to help other authors out as well: Tag My Book On Amazon
- And, finally, as you may already know, CNN.com published an article about self-publishing this week. Here’s where you can read the inevitable response from Writer Beware. Personally, I think those aspiring writers who inundate Writer Beware with “OMG, self-publishing is SO how I’m going to make a pile of money and become the next [insert big name author of choice here]” emails are the same people who suffer from the delusion that breaking into traditional publishing is a ticket to instant riches and fame. Honeys, it so is not. Either way.

Is that FiledBy website worth the trouble to set up a page? I don’t see what the point of it is. Does anyone, besides authors, go there?
I read the CNN story, and now I’m going to check out the websites. Thanks, Kel! I actually thought the article was reasonable. It wasn’t as annoying to me as the New York Times article, which struck me as insulting towards indie authors/publishers at times. This was pretty factual. “This is what this person experienced. . .”
My big question is, how the hell did she get her book reviewed by the Boston Globe?!
