What a week!
Lots of stuff to get to, so with no ado at all…
- Big changes afoot at LuLu Book review. First of all, a new url (so don’t forget to change your bookmarks) and a new, cleaner look. Secondly, a new, streamlined name (LL Book Review). Lastly, and perhaps the biggest change, is that they’ve started reviewing books published with Wordclay and Createspace. If you want your book considered for review, post a comment in their Pick Me! section.
- Book Marketing Floozy ponders that modern day author dilemma, How Much Time Should An Author Spend Tweeting, Facebook-ing and MySpace-ing? ( “The first thing you need to do is determine WHO you need to connect to and WHY.”)
- BlogCritics give indies some respect with Self-Published Authors and New Self-Respect. ( “Based on the due diligence and a commitment to excellence, a new class of authors is using the self published route to effectively print and market their books.”)
- David Nygren at Urban Elitist Interviews Historian Maureen Ogle On Money. ( “Unfortunately, many writers assume and believe they’ll be the exception; that their book will earn a huge advance and land on the bestseller list. They may be, but I doubt it.”)
- Paperback Jack suggests some Warming Up, Stretching Exercises for Writers. ( “Obviously writers aren’t in danger of injury, but it still helps to stretch the mind and warm up first. If we start too cold, we haven’t settled into the right state of mind. Ideas don’t get the chance to lead and let go.”)
- And finally, for any Second Life nerds out there ;) The Creative Penn hosted a podcast that explores Writing and Authors in Second Life, including ” how authors can make money selling their books on SL.”
For all our American readers, Have a fun and safe Memorial Day Weekend.
UPDATE: Two links from our own Evangeline.
From The Nation, The Long Goodbye? The Book Business and Its Woes. ( “As any sensible businessperson knows, you can’t make money in a low-profit operation unless you stay close to your sources of supply and demand–writers and readers in this case. And it helps your profit margin to love or at least respect them.”)
And Self Publishing is Becoming Respectable – Even For The Pros. ( “As the chances of landing a book deal dwindle, even tweedy literary elites are whispering that self publishing might be an acceptable path to legitimacy.”)

This about the growing respectability of self-publishing.
I really liked that third link. Kel, you’re doing a great job of bringing together relevant links for us as a weekly round-up!
Thanks Evangeline! I’ll add those links to the main article.
Z, thanks.
There’s a lot of great stuff out there now, and I think it’s important to bring it to everyone’s attention, and to build a community.
